Raymond shares that his interest in PUB’s work was kindled by an invitation to apply for the PUB sponsorship that he received in his student email account, back when he was a student in Singapore Polytechnic (SP). This interest led him to read up more about PUB, the importance of water treatment and the different processes that water goes through to become potable. He elaborates, “I was attracted by PUB’s continual effort in engaging new technologies and its joint ventures with institutions such as NUS, NTU and its Technology Department. I marveled at the transformation Singapore went through – from her people retrieving water from deep wells and participating in water rationing, to being able to drink water straight out of a tap.”

An Important Role

Fast forward many years, Raymond is now a Technical Officer at PUB. A typical day at work consists of him checking and monitoring the performance of various equipment with the help of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) pages. This task helps him examine data captured on the computer screen and verify if there are any abnormalities on equipment such as air compressors, water pumps, Ultra-Filtration (UF) membranes and Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes.

With the help of technologies, data is captured more accurately and in real time. This is important because it helps officers like Raymond analyse the conduct of equipment and prevent these equipment from breaking down. Raymond tells us, “Each equipment is critical to the fulfilment of operations in the production line. Good and sufficient water production caters to the daily needs of Singaporeans and a surplus of water supply fulfils our needs even during dry weather spells.”

Contributing to PUB

Raymond tells us that the most memorable experience in PUB was when he identified an abnormality in a pump due to the presence of a foreign object. “It was my first instinctive data-related diagnosis and proven to be a correct one. My diagnosis allowed me to ensure that the pump was fully serviced and able to fulfil its quality standards again,” he muses.

He also tells us that each PUB officer plays a crucial role in elevating the standards of PUB. He adds, “I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to contribute to PUB and apply my knowledge acquired in school to my current work. I look forward to coaching new staff by providing them with insights gained from my years of experience.”

And for aspiring PUB sponsorship recipients, Raymond shares his nugget of wisdom, saying, “It is important to work hard and at the same time find joy in studying. The water sector is a diversified and dynamic one that presents many learning opportunities.
