Applying for the STB Scholarship
1.1 When can I apply for the STB Scholarship?
For the early cycle, STB Scholarship applications will open in October and close end October/early November. Alternatively, you may apply during the normal cycle, which will open after the GCE 'A' Level examinations end and close two weeks after the GCE 'A' Level results are released.
1.2 What is the scholarship eligibility criteria?
For the early cycle, you can apply using your preliminary results. Alternatively, you can submit your JC1/IB1 results or your predicted 'A' Level/IB Programme results. A prospective scholar should have excellent grades in 10 units of subjects and good grades in Knowledge and Inquiry (KI)/GP. The H3 subject is not a compulsory requirement for the STB Scholarship.
For students taking the IB programme, the requirement is to obtain a minimum score of 38 points to be considered for the STB scholarship.
In addition, we also look for individuals with excellent CCA track records and other outstanding achievements in our evaluation.
1.3 When will I know if I have been short-listed? When is the selection process?
If you apply in the early cycle, you will be informed by the 3rd week of November (or towards the end of the GCE 'A' Level examinations, whichever is later) should you be short-listed for an interview. The selection process will commence after the GCE 'A' Level examinations and may stretch up to January or February.
If you apply after the release of the GCE 'A' Level results, the selection process will commence in mid-March and may extend into early May. For male applicants, we will take into consideration your National Service period to schedule your interviews. We strongly encourage all applicants to consider the early cycle application.
1.4 What is the selection process like?
The selection process comprises three to four rounds of interviews. The first round is a 20-minute interview with the Scholarship Manager. The second round is a full-day assessment where you will undergo a variety of individual and team exercises. For the third and fourth rounds of interviews, you will meet with the senior management of STB.
1.5 If I'm going for my National Service (NS), do I apply after I have received my GCE
'A' Level results or after I've completed NS?
You are encouraged to apply in the early cycle before your enlistment. You can also send in your applications as soon as you have received your GCE 'A' Level results. However, you can only attend the interviews during your NS block-leave periods. If you are successful in your application, an in-principle offer will be made to you. Upon accepting our offer, we will hold the scholarship for you until you have completed your NS.
1.6 Can I defer my NS?
No. However, we do encourage you to take on personal development courses prior to the start of your university term if there is a long break between the end of your NS and the start of the school term.
The University and Courses I choose
2.1 What courses does STB support?
STB welcomes the diversity of ideas and experiences - therefore, you may choose almost any discipline to study (except for Dentistry, Medicine, Law and Architecture). All STB scholars will have to complete their undergraduate and postgraduate studies (if approved) within a four-year time frame.
2.2 What about a Master's degree?
STB supports its scholars up to a Master's degree. This is subject to approval and the
scholar's fulfillment of certain key selection criteria.
2.3 What about foreign languages or studying in a non-English speaking country?
We encourage our scholars to take up foreign languages like French, German, Japanese, etc. In fact, we encourage scholars to consider going to non-English speaking countries like France, Germany, Japan and China to pursue their studies. The prospective scholar need not have prior background in the language as he / she will be sent for language training at least nine months in advance in the country of study before commencement of studies.
2.4 Is there a list of approved universities that I should apply to?
There isn't a list of approved universities but the general guideline is that the university must be amongst the top for the related field of study you intend to pursue.
Opportunities to experience life in STB (before I start work)
3.1 Are scholars given the opportunity to intern with STB?
Yes. All STB scholars will need to complete a mid-term internship in STB Headquarters i.e. Singapore for at least 10 weeks prior to commencing their 3rd year of studies. The internship is an important part of a scholar's development as it will let him / her experience and participate in the activities in STB. Our scholars have interned in various divisions and departments including the F1 Project, the Integrated Resorts, Arts & Entertainment, etc. We will also consider applications by scholars who wish to intern in the Regional Office located in their country of study, on a case-by-case basis.
