The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was established on
2 February 1996, with the mission to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime centre (IMC), and to advance and safeguard Singapore's strategic maritime interests. The MPA is the driving force behind Singapore's port and maritime development, taking on the roles of Port Authority, Port Regulator, Port Planner, IMC Champion, and National Sea Transport Representative. MPA partners the industry and other agencies to enhance safety, security and environmental protection in our port waters; facilitate port operation and growth; expand the cluster of maritime ancillary services; and promote maritime R&D and manpower development.

The Singapore maritime industry continues to achieve significant results in recent years.
In 2011, at the end of the 3rd quarter, the port of Singapore handled close to 22.3 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit), an increase of 6% over 2010. Over the same period, total vessel calls at our port in terms of shipping tonnage grew by 25% to 1.6 billion gross tons, while bunker sales volume grew by 5% to 32.2 million tons.
In April 2011, emphasising on Singapore’s commitment to address greenhouse gas emissions by shipping, MPA will be investing up to S$100 million over the next five years in the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative to encourage companies who are ready or thinking about undertaking environmentally-friendly shipping practices above and beyond what is IMO-mandated. This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment as a responsible flag, and port state to clean and green shipping.
The Maritime Singapore Green Initiative seeks to further reduce the environmental impact of shipping and related activities and to promote clean and green shipping. It is a comprehensive initiative comprising three programmes – "Green Ship Programme", "Green Port Programme‟ and "Green Technology Programme".
