Pre-registration Pharmacist Denyse Tang and Senior Staff Nurse Grace Tan are two recipients for the RMG Scholarship. We speak to both of them as they share more about how RMG has helped them excel in their fields.
Why do you want to work at RMG?
Denyse Tang: All along, I have been intrigued by how drugs work and the significance a small pill can make in one’s life. My interest in drugs led me to pursue Pharmacy at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the scholarship has allowed me to embark on a career in this field with a reputable medical group like RMG.
Grace Tan: After completing my nursing diploma at Nanyang Polytechnic, I was working in a restructured hospital for about close to three years. Then, I realised that I have to upgrade my nursing skills and knowledge. The RMG scholarship has fulfilled my dream and certainly opened more doors for me by allowing me to pursue my nursing degree at Singapore Institute of Technology (a programme launched in partnership with the University of Manchester). Furthermore, I had the chance to participate in an eye-opening overseas immersion programme in Manchester which lasted for a month.

How does RMG help to fuel your professional development?
Denyse: I am thankful for the opportunity given to be attached to Raffles Hospital as an undergraduate. Through RMG’s attachment programme, I learnt a lot from experienced pharmacists and conduct real-life counselling with patients. The hospital also has a detailed career plan for us which includes working in one of RMG’s overseas medical facilities!
Grace: I agree with Denyse. I was rotated to various departments such as the Emergency department and surgery wards. These have widened my exposure and I am able to discover areas of specialisation that are more in line with my interests.

What have you found fulfilling throughout your time at Raffles Hospital?
Denyse: It’s about the opportunity to learn and experience something new every day. For instance, I am challenged to look through resources to find the best answers or consult my colleagues when it comes to drug enquiries.
Grace: It is fulfilling to have patients express their appreciation towards us. There was this instance when someone called out my name on the MRT. She told me that she was an ex-patient and asked if I still remember her. She thanked me for the care I extended to her and I felt it was indeed a pleasant surprise!
What should those who wish to follow your footsteps bear in mind?
Denyse: As pharmacists, it is important to be vigilant. When dispensing drugs, we are required to spot errors that are potentially harmful to patients or be alert to questionable cues from patients. You need to be passionate about the healthcare industry.
Grace: It is important for nurses to always be compassionate and receptive to feedback. For the aspiring ones out there, the RMG scholarship would be a plus for you if you enjoy caring for others and hope to deliver better nursing care.
